When it comes to guiding proper jaw and tooth development, timing is everything - especially in growing children. One tool we use at EVS Orthodontics to help create space and correct bite issues early on is the palatal expander.
What Is a Palatal Expander?
A palatal expander is a custom-fit appliance that gradually (0.25 mm per day) widens the upper jaw. It sits in the roof of the mouth and uses pressure to gradually expand the palate (the upper jawbone), correcting the bite and creating more space.
This process works best while the bones are still developing; typically between the ages of 7 and 14. When used at the right time, a palatal expander can prevent more complex issues down the road, sometimes even avoiding the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery.
Why Might My Child Need One?
At EVS Ortho, we may recommend a palatal expander to:
Correct crossbites or underbites
Treat crowding by creating space before all adult teeth come in
Support better breathing and nasal airflow
Guide proper facial growth and symmetry
The expansion process is gradual and carefully monitored by our team to ensure comfort and success. After the active phase of expansion is complete, the appliance remains in place for 4 months to allow the bone to stabilize in its new position.
What Can You Expect?
Most kids adapt quickly to a palatal expander. There may be a slight pressure sensation at first, and it will cause a temporary gap between the front teeth (a normal sign that it’s working). We’ll provide clear instructions and check in regularly to monitor progress.
We make the experience as smooth and reassuring as possible—for both kids and parents. We’re here to guide you every step of the way.
